My Entitlements

Despite Bangalore’s reputation as a global technology hub, a significant portion of its population struggles with urban poverty, lack of social security, and limited access to essential services. Migrants and slum dwellers often face precarious employment conditions, inadequate housing, and barriers to education and healthcare.

The “My Entitlements” program by SAMA Foundation is dedicated to empowering urban poor communities by ensuring they gain access to government schemes, essential social security benefits, healthcare, financial literacy, and employment opportunities. Through strategic partnerships and community-driven initiatives, we help individuals and families secure their rightful entitlements, fostering sustainable urban development.

Why We Do It?

While Bangalore continues to expand as a booming economic hub, many of its citizens remain marginalized. The urban poor, particularly migrant workers, slum dwellers, and informal sector workers, struggle with:

  • Lack of government-recognized identity documents (Aadhaar, ration cards, voter IDs) essential for accessing welfare schemes.
  • Limited awareness of social security benefits like health insurance, pensions, and subsidized food programs.
  • Poor access to healthcare and nutrition leading to preventable diseases and malnourishment.
  • Financial exclusion, with many depending on informal credit systems instead of formal banking.
  • Lack of employment and skill-building opportunities, especially for women and youth.

By addressing these systemic barriers, we empower communities to demand their rights, secure their entitlements, and improve their quality of life.

What We Do?

Through our Bangalore Urban Poor Special Project, in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation, we worked closely with slum communities to identify and resolve socio-economic challenges. Our key focus areas include:

  • Enhancing Social Identity – Helping slum dwellers obtain government-recognized documentation (Aadhaar, ration cards, voter IDs) essential for accessing welfare programs.
  • Social Security Awareness – Educating communities about state and central government welfare schemes, ensuring they claim benefits like subsidized food, healthcare, pensions, and scholarships.
  • Health and Nutrition Improvement – Facilitating connections with Primary Health Centres (PHCs), organizing health camps, and promoting better nutrition practices for families.
  • Financial Literacy Promotion – Encouraging financial inclusion by linking individuals to formal banking services, promoting savings practices, and fostering Self-help Groups (SHGs) for financial independence.
  • Women’s Empowerment – Strengthening women’s access to healthcare, nutrition, financial resources, and skill development programs, helping them achieve financial independence.
  • Youth Empowerment – Creating employment pathways for urban youth through skill-building programs, vocational training, and job placement support in collaboration with industry partners.

This initiative ensures that the urban poor are not just aware of their rights but are actively accessing and utilizing them for long-term economic and social stability.
