In today’s dynamic world, education alone is not sufficient. At Sama Foundation, we recognize the evolving landscape and understand the importance of equipping individuals with 21st Century skills. In our Skill Development Centres, we go beyond traditional education to empower students with practical skills that are crucial for success in the modern workforce.
India, with its vast population expected to reach 1.48 billion by 2030, plays a significant role in the global workforce. However, despite the growing working-age population, around 40% of people in India live on less than US$1.25 a day. Limited education and skills among the youth have created barriers to accessing opportunities in emerging markets.
Addressing urban poverty requires a multi-dimensional approach, considering residential, occupational, and social vulnerabilities faced by the poor in cities and towns. India’s remarkable economic growth in the past decade has positioned it as one of the largest and fastest-growing global economies. Yet, the labor market struggles to find skilled talent, hindering sustained growth. Recognizing this, Sama Foundation is committed to bridging the employability gap by providing continuous skill development opportunities for the workforce. Our initiative aligns with the imperative for India to sustain and accelerate its growth trajectory. CLIMATE CHANGE
WHY WE DO?
Climate change poses a profound impact on Urban Poor Communities, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. Concentrated in high-Risk areas, such as information settlements, the urban poor face heightened exposure to extreme weather events, leading to heath risks, housing vulnerabilities and disruptions in lively hoods. Limited adaptive capacity, coupled with insufficient resources, compounds the challenges. Climate-related impacts on agriculture contribute to increased food insecurity, while water and sanitation challenges persists. The social inequality gap widens as the urban poor bear disproportionate burden. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive strategies, including resilient urban planning, social safety nets, and collaborative efforts to build sustainable and inclusive urban environments resilient to Climate Changes.
WHAT WE DO?
The Youth Climate Action Lab, a 36-month initiative launched in November 2021, is a youth-led movement addressing climate change issues in urban Bengaluru. With a focus on training, mobilizing, and supporting young climate champions and researchers, the initiative aims to raise awareness, engage communities, and drive change in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. By identifying challenges and proposing youth-led solutions, the movement seeks to contribute to the state climate action plan and build a coalition of youth-led organizations. This project implemented with the support of Restless Development, aims to create a replicable, scalable model driven by young people, ensuring accountability and real policy outcomes.

WHY WE DO?
Bangalore, a city synonymous with technological progress, is not immune to the challenges of urban poverty. As the city continues to thrive, a significant population grapples with issues such as inadequate housing, limited access to healthcare and education, and precarious employment conditions. Migrants, drawn by the promise of opportunities, often face the harsh reality of urban poverty. Sama Foundation recognizes the urgency to address these challenges and has initiated targeted projects to enhance the living conditions, health, and socio-economic status of the urban poor in Bangalore. Through strategic partnerships and community mobilization, we strive to bring about positive change and create pathways for sustainable urban development.

BANGALORE URBAN POOR SPECIAL PROJECT
Our special initiative in Bangalore focuses on mobilizing communities to address the unique challenges faced by urban poor slum dwellerss in the city. Through a collaborative effort with the Azim Premji Foundation, we have significantly deepened our impact and broadened our reach.
Key Areas of Focus:
- Enhancing Social Identity:
- Empowering slum dwellers workers by facilitating essential government documentation as prescribed by the state.
- Social Security Awareness:
- Raising awareness about various social security benefits, welfare schemes, and entitlements available to slum dwellers workers.
- Health and Nutrition Improvement:
- Improving the health and nutrition of slum dwellers communities through connections to Primary Health Centres and promoting a balanced diet.
- Financial Literacy Promotion:
- Promoting financial literacy by linking individuals to formal banking, encouraging healthy saving practices through bank accounts, and fostering self-help groups.
- Women’s Empowerment:
- Empowering women through targeted interventions in health, nutrition, financial literacy, and skill development.
- Youth Empowerment:
- Empowering youth through strategic partnerships with relevant organizations to enhance skillsets and create employment opportunities.
This collaborative project aims to create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of urban poor slum dwellerss in Bangalore, fostering holistic development and empowerment within these communities.
